Dr. Ernie Bowling is Chief Optometric Editor of Optometry Times. He received his Doctor of Optometry and Master of Science in Physiological Optics degrees from the UAB School of Optometry. Dr. Bowling is a Diplomate in the Primary Care Section of the American Academy of Optometry. He practices in Gadsden, AL.

The older I become, it seems the faster time flies. Five years ago, I was asked by someone I greatly respect and admire to become chief optometric editor of this publication. Now, five years later, the time has flown by in a blur, and I am moving on.

Perhaps underlying surface fears is a basic fear of change. We humans are creatures of habit, and habits are hard to break. It takes nerves of steel to open a practice cold in today’s environment, yet several of my former students have done precisely that and are doing extremely well. So, it can be done, but I am quite sure they had their moments of fear.
