Glaucoma papers to cover a wide range of topics

The top glaucoma papers, as determined by the Ophthalmology Times Editorial Advisory Board, will cover a broad spectrum of topics at the 2003 Annual Meeting of The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), from imaging to surgery and wound healing.

A mini-symposium, entitled "Progressive Structural and Functional Injury in Glaucoma," will be the highlight of the glaucoma presentations. This session, scheduled for Tuesday, will provide a nice overview and a framework for judging the relevance of the other sessions, where new data are presented.

The papers (Program #2043-#2049) for the mini-symposium include:

  • "Biology of Progressive Optic Nerve Injury in Glaucoma" by George Cioffi, MD;

  • "Progressive Central Nervous System Injury in Glaucoma" by Neeru Gupta, MD;

  • "Risk Factors that Predict Glaucoma Progression" by David Friedman, MD;

  • "Detection of Progressive Structural Injury in Glaucoma" by David Greenfield, MD;

  • "Detection of Progressive Functional Injury in Glaucoma" by E.Z. Blumenthal, MD;

  • "New Approaches in Detecting Progression" by P.A. Samples;

  • "Does Structural Injury Predict Future Functional Injury?" by Christopher Girkin, MD

Another glaucoma session expected to draw physicians' interest is "Surgery and Wound Healing III," which is scheduled for Thursday. The session addresses some new approaches and thought about glaucoma, but also touches base on some time-tested topics, such as on effectiveness and safety of viscocanalostomy and trabeculectomy. The papers (Program #4290-#4296) in this session are:

  • "Gene Therapy to Modulate Wound Healing Following Trabeculectomy: Transfection of Tenon Fibroblasts with Oligonucleotides" by Holger Mietz, MD, et al.;

  • "Long-Term Modulation of Ocular Scarring by Matrix Metalloproteinase Inhibition-Comparison with Mitomycin-C Treatment Following Experimental Glaucoma Filtration" by T.T. L. Wong, et al.;

  • "Maintenance of Long-Term Bleb Function by Prolonged Treatment with CAT-152, an Anti-Transforming Growth Factor-ß2 (TGF-ß2) Antibody: Enhanced Effects over 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU)" by A.L. Mead, et al.;

  • "Yag Laser Iridotomy in Pigment Dispersion Syndrome: 10 Years Later" by N. Ungaro, et al.;

  • "A Prospective, Randomized, Comparative Study between Endoscopic Cyclophotocoagulation and the Ahmed Drainage Implant in Refractive Glaucoma" by Francisco Lima, MD, et al.;

  • "Viscocanalostomy versus TrabeculectomyThree Years After" by Roberto Garassa, MD, et al.;

  • "Fornix versus Limbus-Based Conjunctival Flap Trabeculectomy and the Incidence of Bleb-Related Infection" by P.A. Rai, et al.

Two other sessions that should attract some attention from ophthalmologists in dealing with glaucoma issues are "Neuroprotection, Normal Tension Glaucoma, and Ocular Blood Flow II" and "Glaucoma Epidemiology I," scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.

Some of the better papers to be presented in the neuroprotection, normal tension glaucoma, and ocular blood flow session include:

  • "Optineurin Mutations in Patients with Low Pressure Glaucoma (LPG): No Evidence for E50K Founder Effect" by M. Sarfarazi, et al. (Program #2148);

  • "TNF-a-Mediated Death of Retinal Ganglion Cells Following Optic Nerve Crush Injury in Mice" by G. Tezel, et al. (Program #2149);

  • "Imaging Apoptosis in the Living Eye: A Novel Method of Assessing Retinal Ganglion Cells and Glaucoma" by M.F. Cordeiro, et al. (Program #2150);

  • "A New Route for Therapeutic Intervention: Topical Vaccination for Acute and Chronic Glaucoma" by S. Bakalash, et al. (Program #2151).

In the glaucoma epidemiology session, here are the some of the top papers to be presented:

  • "Topical Treatment of Persons with Ocular Hypertension: Who Should Be Treated? An Economic Evaluation from the Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study (OHTS)" by S.M. Kymes, et al. (Program #3168);

  • "Relationship Between Thyroid Disease and Glaucoma: The Blue Mountain Eye Study" by A.J. Lee, et al. (Program #3169);

  • "Risk Indicators of Glaucoma in Families" by B.E.K. Klein, et al. (Program #3171);

  • "The Prevalence of Glaucoma in Population-Based Sample of Elderly Saudis" by Scott Smith, MD, et al. (Program #3172);

  • "Prevalence of Open-Angle Glaucoma and Ocular Hypertension in Latinos. The Los Angeles Latino Eye Study (LALES)" by Rohit Varma, MD, et al. (Program #3173).

A good number of other glaucoma sessions are planned throughout this year's ARVO meeting. Among the paper presentations that ophthalmologists should consider looking at are:

  • "Optic Nerved Head Topography Shows Diurnal Variation in Untreated Primary Open Angle Glaucoma" by M. Sehi, et al. (Program #979);
