Antibiotic sensitivity in flora of conjunctiva and lid margin

I am Doug Katsev, MD, and this is the Medical News Minute.

What is the most common bacteria on the conjunctiva and lid margin in patients undergoing cataract surgery?

An article in Clinical Ophthalmology may have the answer.

A prospective study design was used to isolate the bacteria during cataract surgery.

The conclusion…coag-negative staph was the most prominent bacteria on the lid margin and conjunctiva.

All bacteria isolated in this study were 100% sensitive to cefazolin and other antibiotics.
